Hands on Healing: Massage Remedies for Hundreds of Health Problems
Published in Hardcover by Rodale Press (August, 1989)
Authors: John Feltman and Prevention Magazine
Average review score:

In the bodywork field this gets a 10 STAR rating
This book gives excellent thumbnail sketches of most of the bodywork techniques currently available in the U.S. Prospective clients get a sneak preview before paying for a service. Bodyworkers get a sneak preview before investing continuing education dollars in a particular field. An invaluable resource for bodywork students. Peggy Hays,LMT owner Columbus Academy of Medical Massage

Excellent survey of the bodywork field as of 1991.
Each therapy in the book is described in terms of history, background, and from a first-person perspective that makes it easy to get a sense of the therapy. Please, please, please update this book - it was the most helpful resource I've come across, and I was excited to get an updated version, but alas there was none...

A first-line resource for descriptions on manual therapies
This book surveys the plentiful landscape of manual, hands-on therapies. The description of the therapy and resource phone numbers and addresses of certifying or teaching bodies associated with the therapy, allows the reader to determine if a particular therapy is worth investigating. This book is the first book I reach for when a person in the fibromyalgia support group that I lead is trying to locate a therapy that may help them escape from the pain of fibromyalgia. A message to Rodale Press: Update this book

Hands-On English
Published in Paperback by Portico Books (September, 1998)
Authors: Fran Santoro Hamilton and Michael Hamilton
Average review score:

Valuable learning tool about how to write.
Hands-On English is a well-organized, carefully thought out introduction to how the English language works and how it can be used to help one communicate more effectively. The author discusses the basics of grammar, usage, writing mechanics, and the writing process in straightforward language anyone can understand. At the same time, she has developed a set of illustrations that effectively demonstrate how the parts of speech or parts of a sentence interrelate and that wonderfully enhance this book's value as a learning tool.

This book could help anyone who wants to know how to communicate more effectively-especially anyone who missed, or has long since forgotten, the grammar taught in school. I have recommended Hands-On English to my graduate communications students at a local university, and the ones who have used it have found it beneficial. This book is particularly appealing when one compares it to the many lame and carelessly written "how to" writing books currently on the market. Even though it is apparently aimed at junior high school students, Hands-On English is still an excellent tool for businesspeople, engineers, or anyone else who would like to write more effectively

Harvey F. Fletcher, San Antonio, retired cartographer
Hands-On English definitely belongs in every home library. It has been a quick reference for me and a tremendous help in putting together the text for my historical atlas.

An update on Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" for Y2K
For decades Strunk & White's "Elements of Style" rallied us to write our best English, no more and no less. Each of its sentences demonstrated to the listening ear that good writing was a matter--not of Baroque gilding, Gothic loftiness, or Romantic breathlessness--but of Yankee economy, craft, and precision.

Now the lessons that Strunk & White made clear to anyone with ears to hear have been given a visual and tactile dimension by Fran Santoro in "Hands-On English." This is an important enhancement for those of us whose best appendage for learning is not the ear but the eye or the hand--I mean you, joy-sticking Webmaster, and you, number-crunching Engineer, and even you, paint-spattered Marketer . . . Step up and feel with your own hands the difference between the lumpen cube of a noun and the coiled spring of a verb! Admire the tongue-and-groove snugness of a well fitted sentence. For a mind-blowing effect, line up a series of verbs and watch them spring forth like so many slinkies tumbling down the stairs.

See an adjective--with one daub of its paintbrush tip--transform that noun-cube before your very eyes! And then marvel at the transformation of that adjectival paintbrush, in its turn, by one dusting from an adverbial magic wand! Let your fingers grope beneath the noun-cube for the hooks from which you can, if you have need, suspend one!--two!--three!--prepositional magnets, each securely supporting a corresponding object of the preposition.

In short, Fran Santoro succeeds where many others have failed: laying bare the mechanics of "grammar" so that that dread word will shake off forever its Dali-esque surreality. For this we all owe her "Hands-On English" a Siskel-and-Ebert-style two thumbs up!

If you are a parent, a teacher, an employed person of any kind, buy a copy of "Hands-On English": you know someone in desperate need of this book. And if you mastered all this years ago--even if you spent your down time as a kid diagramming sentences!--buy this book for the wicked pleasure its stick-in-the-eye precision of language will bring you. It's a new-and-improved Strunk and White in Furby clothing.

He Died with a Felafel in His Hand
Published in Audio Cassette by Polygram Spoken Word ()
Author: John Birmingham

Don't leave home without (reading) this book!
This is a fascinating descent into the lives of people who share houses. Most of the people have different ideas about cleanliness, or ownership, of relationships. Many of the stories are hilarious and disturbing at the same time. I don't recommend eating while reading (parts of) this book though.

This has been made into a stage show and movie (which is being released soon). The book has a sequel called The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco.

It's very light reading, very revealing and funny, and not for those easily shocked (if you get to the end and you're not just a LITTLE bit shocked, I'd worry though). Highly recommended

This Book Saved My Housemates Life !
The title says it all really. If it wasn't for "Felafel" my housemate might have ended up in a shallow grave in my backyard. It has to be one of the coolest books on share house living ever written. Some of Johns other titles include "Tasmanian Babes Fiasco" and "Leviathan: The Unauthorised Biography". Personally I'm hanging out for his new book "Dopeland" and you'll have to work out what thats about by yourself. Although I can say that we did have the pleasure of assisting the author with his research into microbreweries when he came to Perth. "Felafel" is well worth a read and I highly recommend it.

Living with people makes life interesting...
I picked up this hilarious book while travelling in Australia and it made a truly wonderful literary companion to the trip. Birmingham's comically detailed and slightly skewed vignettes from his days as a "flatmate" are a riot to read regardless of their basis in fiction. The book begins with a story of a mysterious drug addict flatmate that was found dead with a falafel in hand and it just gets funnier from there. Birmingham's tone and joie de vivre makes for an enjoyable read. Because of the nature of the vignettes, reading this book in small doses is a great way to pass the time while waiting for the plane, or bus, or ferry, or just killing time between adventures. If you've ever lived with someone that was a less than desirable roomate/flatmate, you will undoubtedly enjoy Birmingham's twisted experiences and witty prose.

Healing for Horses: The Essential Guide to Using Hands-On Healing Energy with Horses
Published in Hardcover by Sterling Publications (May, 2002)
Author: Margrit Coates
Average review score:

Healing work open to all
Through this well-written book Margrit Coates brings healing work to horse and animal lovers of all ages and experience. She clearly explains healing with words, illustrations, and case studies. The reader comes away with practical knowledge and guidance on how to bring healing to animals. Using the information in Margrit's book has helped horses overcome trailer issues, calm them, and increase overall health and vigor. Each person can be a conduit for healing, and Margrit shows us how to start. I eagerly await her new book coming this June (2003) - Hands-On Healing for Pets, as well as her return visit to Oregon this September, 2003.

A must read for any body worker - human or equine!
Margrit has done an excellent job! It is easily the best energy healing book I have ever read.
She is able to give some very clear, practical tips. After reading her book one would be able to go out and start doing this work with their horse. Even if they had never done it before.
It is the type of book you can read over and over, and get something new out of it every time!

Healing for Horses
Wonderful book on energy healing for horses. Great diagrams and pictures. Clear directions presented on how to give a healing treatment. A number of varied case studies are included which I really found helpful. Whether you are a Reiki Practitioner or Spiritual Healer who loves animals, you will benefit from reading this book and having it as part of your Healing library.

Hearts and Hands: Women, Quilts, and American Society
Published in Paperback by Rutledge Hill Press (September, 1999)
Authors: Elaine Hedges, Pat Ferrero, Julie Silber, and Hedges Ferrero Silber
Average review score:

Interesting for all - not just women or quilters
Before I bought the book I saw the video three times. When I was watching it at home, one by one my family sat down and joined me. The panoramic view of American history through the quilts the women made from the Revolutionary War up through the 1800s was fascinating and touching. An excellent video and an excellent book.

Hearts and Hands
I used the accompanying video in a workshop I taught at the University level. What a heartwarming and accurate trip through womens' history, linking us to them through a common craft. The book successfully informs us of their political and social challenges as we view the gorgeous creations of their hands. The music score is vital to portraying the feeling, as well, and is perfect to the subject.

I recommend viewing the video for any who are interested in womens' history or in the folkart of quilting.

American Women "Revealed" through their Quilting
The story of how women used quilts not only as bedcoverings, but as mementos of their friends, artistic expressions in bleak lives, political commentary when they didn't have the vote, fundraising, slogan flags--more ways than imagined! Quilts were even considered a symbol of women's repression at one time! An interesting slant on the role of women in American history (the keepers of morality!). Excellent pictures, great inspirations, and lots of fun! This book was the reference basis for the book and movie "How to Make an American Quilt."

How to File for Divorce in Georgia: With Forms (Take the Law into Your Own Hands)
Published in Paperback by Sphinx Pub (December, 1993)
Authors: Charles T. Robertson and Edward A. Haman

Excellent Book if you and your spouse agree on everything
This book helped me tremendously. It is an excellent resource, especially if you and your spouse can come to agreement on everything - you don't need an attorney if you can agree. I read the book, copied the forms out of the book and filed them with the court, typed up an agreement that both of us signed and everything went smoothly. You really can have a "do it yourself" divorce for the cost of the court filing fee. Highly recommended book.

this book was great!
I found this book at the library, it was soooo helpful! i would recommend it to any one with a divorce issue!i just copied the stuff at a copy machine and filled it in! I only had to pay $65.00 to have it filed and everything!,very good book!enjoy!

How to File for Divorce in Georgia, 4th ed
Excellent book...There is no telling how much money that it saved me, well into the thousands, because when my now ex-wife and i could not agree on one or two small things and I had to get an attorny, after all. All i did was give my lawyer the Papers that the book helped me write and he basically copied them for the Divorce. He asked me if I had had any leagel training. (NO) Then I showed him the book, and he made the commit under his breath "We hate those things" He then asked to review it and asked for the number were he could get it. The next week, I was in his office to sign some papers and he had a brand new copy of it laying on the corner of his desk. Thanks alot for the help Amazon.com

In Her Hands: Craftswomen Changing the World
Published in Hardcover by The Monacelli Press (19 October, 2000)
Authors: Paola Gianturco, Toby Tuttle, and Alice Walker
Average review score:

This book does make a difference!
The glorious color photos and stories have inspired me to meet the craftswomen. I took the book with me on assignment in Guatemala with women weavers and watched the delight and pride from the weavers as they enjoyed the pictures of women like themselves. Each story is a challenge to all of us to seek out these crafts and use them in our daily lives. The well written stories by Paola and the personal essays by Toby are inspirational. They captured the reality of life and the possibilities. I left my copy in Guatemala and just ordered two more as gifts. This is a beautiful book.

A wonderful holiday gift for all my female friends
In Her Hands: Craftswomen Changing the World is a gorgeous photojournalistic volume about women around the world who make indigenous crafts. The crafts, varied and wonderful as they are, are sold at market so that the women can have an income stream to improve their economic situation. Money earned this way is most often used to pay for children's education and improved nutrition. These are often women who live in abject poverty, many without the help of income-generating husbands, who are passionate about giving their children better lives. One admires their focus, their intelligence, and the joy with which they live their lives, as documented by the two author/photographers, Paola Gianturco and Toby Tuttle. This is a wonderful coffee-table sized book with glorious images for anyone who loves crafts, travel, photography and for anyone who thinks and cares about the lives of women around the world. Well-done! I've already bought three!

Truly Great Book!

Amazing photography and unique insight into far lands and distant peoples. "In Her Hands" takes you on a journey to the places you've always wanted to go and into the lives of the people you wish you'd meet when you travel. Women around the world, working to create art and improve their lives. No flashy get-rich-quick success stories, no explosive dot-com egos, but real people who truly earn their success, day by day. The book deals fairly and honestly with complex issues of traditional societies around the world, as women invest their own money in the education of their children and change their local economies.

Beautiful, color-rich images help tell the tale all along. Like photography from LIFE magazine or National Geo, the photos make stories of In Her Hands almost leap from the page.

I highly recommend this to anyone and will be buying many copies as gifts for the holidays!

Just Hand over the Chocolate and No One Will Get Hurt
Published in Paperback by Walker and Co. (August, 2002)
Author: Karen Scalf Linamen
Average review score:

Absolutely READ IT!
This book deserves 20 stars.

This is one of those books that you thank God you were blessed enough to come across. This book is for every woman, every age. You will never again believe you are the only one going through rough times.

Ms. Linamen is a very down to earth and encouraging woman. As you read you feel as if she is sitting right next to you, sharing her life and giving you hints on how to muddle through the valleys full of stumbling blocks.

The author discusses: minivacations, friends, fine whine, depression, dreams, simplifying life, grudges, weight, our inner child and our souls.

I cannot recommend this book enthusiastically enough. You really must read it!

Awesome!
This book is a keeper! Loved it, Loved it! Loved it! Karen is a genious! She is histerical yet practical! Loved it!

Karen Linamen is very much worth reading.
I knew Karen when she and my husband worked together in Dallas, TX. Karen is funny, real, and very down-to-earth; but she is also deeply rooted, spiritually. She writes from her life - warts and all. I picked this book up in the bookstore and began to read the first page. I read almost the whole first chapter right in the bookstore! I couldn't put it down! Just Hand Over the Chocolate is for every woman who has ever experienced stress or depression or just gotten in a rut and lost their joy in Christ (and then self-medicated with a 1/2 pound bag of m&m's).

Worth Every Penny!!!
Master the Grill the Lazy Way?? How can you grill in any manner other than the hard, hot, messy way? By reading this book!! Grilling is made as simple and clear as possible and is interspersed with humor, quick timely tips, do's and don'ts - It's the best cookbook I have had in my hands (and I have a TON of them) in a long time - you can actually sit down and read it - not just skim thru it. Worth EVERY PENNY!!!!

Laziness is a mantra for me...
I'm 19 years old, I have to say that Laziness has become a true way of life for me. I got my copy of "Master the Grill the Lazy Way" yesterday afternoon, and it's already become my cooking bible. The book itself is absolutely histerical, and the recipes are remarkable -- both tastey and easy. The writers are truely fantastic people, and I aspire to be as Lazy as they are some day.

The BTO of Cookbooks!
I was fortunate to read the introduction to this book - its funnier than hell! The recipes have to be good, too - read it, I'm sure you will be glad you did!
